BAYONNE: Garwood Councilman William Schadewald III was arrested last month on drunken driving and drug charges in Bayonne, police said yesterday.
Schadewald, 44, was seen driving erratically April 3 on Broadway and was stopped after going through a red light at 29th Street, police said.
Schadewald, a pet store owner first elected to the council in 1996, was unsteady on his feet and had to be assisted by officers, police said. His speech was slurred, his breath smelled of alcohol, and he refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police said.
Schadewald was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, refusing to submit to a breath test, careless driving and refusing to exhibit license and registration, said his attorney, Edward Kologi.
Schadewald, who did not re turn a call seeking comment, plans to contest the charges in court and has not discussed with his lawyer how the charges will affect his council seat, Kologi said.
"Just because a person has consumed some alcohol that does not automatically convict the guy of DWI," Kologi said.
Schadewald's appearance in Bayonne Municipal Court has been set for Monday, Kologi said.
